Upcoming SAAB Congress


 The 43rd Annual conference of the South African Association of

Botanists (SAAB) will be held 8-11 January 2017 at the Life Science Building, University of the Western Cape (UWC), Bellville, Cape Town

The 2017 conference will be jointly arranged by UWC and the Cape Peninsula  University of Technology. We look forward to welcomingyou to Cape Town and urge you to please diarise this event and dates and include it in your budget. We also encourage those who wish to arrange workshops during this event to contact the organising committee.

More information on registration, accommodation and the conference program will become available during the course of 2017 via the conference website (once live) and SAABNet.

42nd annual SAAB Conference held in Bloemfontein, January 2016

The 42nd SAAB Congress hosted at the University of the Free State was attended by 215 delegates from all corners of South Africa. Five plenary lectures were given with special guest Jacques Vervoort from the Netherlands delivering a keynote paper on Chemical defence mechanisms in plants.  Prof William Bond was presented with the SAAB Gold Medal while Dr Rob Skelton won the Bronze.  Rabia Mathakutha cupped both the Best MSc oral presentation and the Best Young Scientist award for her paper on Understanding the role of functional traits in plant invasions in the sub-Antarctic islands. The best oral paper by a PhD went to Margaret Hulley; Honours award to Monja Berber and the Best Poster over all categories to Nelly Black. See PDF for details: First_Circular.pdf


41st annual SAAB Conference held in Venda, January 2015

The conference was organized by the Botany Department at the University of Venda with the theme Sustaining Biodiversity; over 167 delegates attended from all over South Africa.

AETFAT Conference Stellenbosch, January 2014


In light of the fact that AETFAT was hosted in Stellenbosch at the same time as the SAAB (13 to 17 January 2014) would normally be held, the SAAB council made the decision not to hold a separate conference in 2014. The AETFAT conference instead carried the SAAB banner for 2014.

39th Annual SAAB Conference in KwaZulu-Natal, January 2013

The SAAB congress in January 2013 was hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Drakensville.

The conference theme was ‘Green is Gold’ in celebration of South Africa’s remarkable plant biodiversity which is an important resource for socioeconomic growth.

The 38th Annual Conference of the South African Association of Botanists (SAAB) was hosted by the Department of Plant Science at the University of Pretoria from 15 to 18 January 2012. The theme of the congress was “Plants and Society”.
